Description
A traditional, double-crust apple pie recipe perfect for a special occasion.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup (2 sticks) cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
- 1/2 cup ice water
- 6 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Prepare the pie crust: Mix flour and salt. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add ice water until dough just comes together. Divide dough in half, form into disks, wrap, and chill for at least 1 hour.
- Prepare the filling: In a large bowl, combine sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, 2 tablespoons flour, and lemon juice. Toss gently to coat.
- Preheat your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit (220 degrees Celsius).
- Roll out one dough disk and place it in a 9-inch pie plate. Trim the edges.
- Pour the apple filling into the bottom crust. Dot with small pieces of remaining butter if desired.
- Roll out the second dough disk for the top crust. Place it over the filling. Crimp and seal the edges. Cut several slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
- Brush the top crust with the beaten egg wash.
- Bake for 15 minutes at 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Reduce the oven temperature to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius) and continue baking for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
- Cool on a wire rack for at least 2 hours before slicing and serving.
Notes
- If the crust browns too quickly during baking, cover the edges loosely with aluminum foil.
- Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or cheddar cheese.
