Description

A straightforward recipe for Egyptian Goulash, featuring layers of pasta, ground meat, and a simple tomato sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 12 ounces Egyptian macaroni (or similar short pasta tubes)
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius). Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Brown the ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat. Drain any excess fat.
  3. Add the chopped onion to the skillet and cook until soft, about 5 minutes.
  4. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more.
  5. Add the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, oregano, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Cook the macaroni according to package directions until al dente. Drain well.
  7. In the baking dish, spread half of the cooked macaroni in an even layer.
  8. Spoon half of the meat sauce over the macaroni layer.
  9. Top with the remaining macaroni, then cover with the remaining meat sauce.
  10. Pour the beef broth evenly over the top layer.
  11. Sprinkle the Parmesan cheese over the top.
  12. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the liquid is mostly absorbed and the top is lightly browned.
  13. Let the goulash rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground turkey or lamb for the ground beef.
  • For a richer flavor, use 1 cup of beef broth mixed with 1/2 cup of water instead of just broth.
