Description
A traditional and hearty spaghetti bolognese sauce.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 2 carrots, chopped
- 2 celery stalks, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 pound ground pork
- 1 cup dry red wine
- 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
- 1 pound spaghetti
- Grated Parmesan cheese, for serving
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add onion, carrots, and celery. Cook until softened, about 8-10 minutes.
- Add garlic and cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.
- Add ground beef and ground pork. Cook, breaking up the meat with a spoon, until browned. Drain off excess fat.
- Pour in the red wine and scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the pot. Let it simmer for 2-3 minutes until mostly evaporated.
- Stir in crushed tomatoes, beef broth, oregano, and basil. Season with salt and pepper.
- Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for at least 1 hour, stirring occasionally. For a richer flavor, simmer for up to 2 hours.
- Meanwhile, cook spaghetti according to package directions. Drain.
- Serve the bolognese sauce over the cooked spaghetti. Top with grated Parmesan cheese.
Notes
- For a deeper flavor, you can add a bay leaf while the sauce simmers.
- You can substitute half-and-half for the beef broth for a creamier sauce.
