Description

A traditional and hearty spaghetti bolognese sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 pound ground pork
  • 1 cup dry red wine
  • 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1 pound spaghetti
  • Grated Parmesan cheese, for serving

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add onion, carrots, and celery. Cook until softened, about 8-10 minutes.
  2. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.
  3. Add ground beef and ground pork. Cook, breaking up the meat with a spoon, until browned. Drain off excess fat.
  4. Pour in the red wine and scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the pot. Let it simmer for 2-3 minutes until mostly evaporated.
  5. Stir in crushed tomatoes, beef broth, oregano, and basil. Season with salt and pepper.
  6. Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for at least 1 hour, stirring occasionally. For a richer flavor, simmer for up to 2 hours.
  7. Meanwhile, cook spaghetti according to package directions. Drain.
  8. Serve the bolognese sauce over the cooked spaghetti. Top with grated Parmesan cheese.

Notes

  • For a deeper flavor, you can add a bay leaf while the sauce simmers.
  • You can substitute half-and-half for the beef broth for a creamier sauce.
