A recipe for traditional layered meat lasagna with rich meat sauce and cheese filling.

- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 pound Italian sausage, casings removed
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 (28 ounce) cans crushed tomatoes
- 2 (15 ounce) cans tomato sauce
- 1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
- 2 teaspoons dried basil
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 12 lasagna noodles
- 1 (15 ounce) container ricotta cheese
- 1 large egg
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese, plus more for topping
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
Instructions
- Cook ground beef and sausage in a large pot over medium heat until browned. Drain fat.
- Add onion and cook until soft, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute more.
- Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, basil, oregano, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Cook lasagna noodles according to package directions until al dente. Drain well.
- In a medium bowl, mix ricotta cheese, egg, and 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese.
- Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
- Spread a thin layer of meat sauce in the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- Arrange 4 lasagna noodles over the sauce.
- Spread half of the ricotta mixture over the noodles.
- Sprinkle one-third of the mozzarella cheese over the ricotta.
- Spoon half of the remaining meat sauce over the mozzarella.
- Repeat layers: 4 noodles, remaining ricotta, one-third of the mozzarella, remaining sauce.
- Top with the final 4 noodles and the remaining mozzarella cheese. Sprinkle with extra Parmesan.
- Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Let stand for 10 minutes before cutting and serving.
Notes
- For a thicker sauce, simmer uncovered for an additional 15 minutes.
- You can substitute ground turkey for the ground beef or sausage.
- If you prefer a smoother ricotta layer, process the mixture in a food processor until creamy.
