Description
A recipe for making classic meatball subs using homemade marinara sauce.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 24 ounces marinara sauce
- 4 submarine rolls
- 4 slices provolone cheese
Instructions
- Combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, Parmesan cheese, oregano, salt, pepper, and garlic in a bowl. Mix gently.
- Form the mixture into 12 small meatballs.
- Brown the meatballs in a large skillet over medium heat, turning to cook all sides. Drain excess fat.
- Pour the marinara sauce over the meatballs. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Preheat your oven broiler.
- Slice the submarine rolls lengthwise, but do not cut all the way through.
- Place 3 meatballs and sauce into each roll. Top each sub with one slice of provolone cheese.
- Place the subs on a baking sheet. Broil for 2 to 3 minutes, watching closely, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Serve immediately.
Notes
- You can use store-bought marinara sauce to save time.
- For a richer flavor, bake the meatballs at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes before adding them to the sauce.
