- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 pound Italian sausage
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 (28 ounce) cans crushed tomatoes
- 2 (6 ounce) cans tomato paste
- 1/2 cup water
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- 12 lasagna noodles
- 15 ounces ricotta cheese
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 pound mozzarella cheese, shredded
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
- In a large pot, brown the ground beef and Italian sausage over medium-high heat. Drain off excess fat.
- Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more.
- Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, and water. Add the parsley, salt, pepper, basil, and oregano. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat and cook for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- While the sauce is simmering, cook the lasagna noodles according to package directions. Drain and rinse with cold water.
- In a medium bowl, mix together the ricotta cheese, egg, and Parmesan cheese.
- Spread a thin layer of meat sauce in the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- Arrange 3 lasagna noodles over the sauce.
- Spread half of the ricotta cheese mixture over the noodles.
- Top with one-third of the mozzarella cheese.
- Spoon about one-third of the remaining meat sauce over the mozzarella.
- Repeat layers: noodles, ricotta mixture, mozzarella, meat sauce.
- Top with the remaining noodles, meat sauce, and mozzarella cheese.
- Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes.
- Remove foil and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until bubbly and golden brown.
- Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
- For a richer sauce, you can add a splash of red wine while simmering.
- If you prefer a less dense lasagna, use fewer noodles.
- Ensure your ricotta mixture is well combined for even distribution.
