Description

A simple recipe for a moist and slightly sweet bread featuring oats and honey.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm water (105-115°F)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups rolled oats
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. Combine warm water and yeast in a large bowl. Let stand for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Stir in honey, melted butter, and salt into the yeast mixture.
  3. Add rolled oats and mix well.
  4. Gradually add flour, mixing until a shaggy dough forms.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5 to 7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  6. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  7. Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place it in a greased 9×5 inch loaf pan.
  8. Cover the pan and let the dough rise again for 30 minutes.
  9. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  10. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the internal temperature reaches 200°F (93°C).
  11. Remove the bread from the pan immediately and cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

  • For a softer crust, brush the top of the loaf with a little extra melted butter immediately after removing it from the oven.
  • You can substitute brown sugar for honey, but adjust the liquid slightly if the dough seems too dry.
