Ingredients

  • 2 pounds russet potatoes, peeled and quartered
  • 1/2 cup milk, warmed
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, plus more to taste
  • For the Gravy:
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Place the potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold water. Bring to a boil and cook for 15-20 minutes, or until fork-tender.
  2. Drain the potatoes well and return them to the pot.
  3. Add the warm milk, butter, salt, and pepper to the pot. Mash the potatoes until smooth and creamy.
  4. For the gravy, melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
  5. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  6. Gradually whisk in the beef broth until smooth.
  7. Bring the gravy to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes, or until thickened.
  8. Season the gravy with salt and pepper to taste.
  9. Serve the mashed potatoes topped with the gravy.

Notes

  • For extra creamy mashed potatoes, use a potato ricer.
  • You can substitute chicken broth or vegetable broth for beef broth in the gravy.
