Description

A simple recipe for classic Salisbury steak served with brown gravy.


Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme

Instructions

  1. Combine ground beef, bread crumbs, milk, egg, onion, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce in a bowl. Mix gently until just combined.
  2. Form the mixture into four oval patties, about 1/2 inch thick.
  3. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  4. Cook the patties for 4 to 5 minutes per side until browned. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  5. Add flour to the skillet drippings and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  6. Gradually whisk in the beef broth until smooth. Add thyme.
  7. Bring the gravy to a simmer, stirring until slightly thickened.
  8. Return the patties to the skillet. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 10 minutes, or until cooked through.

Notes

  • For richer flavor, use half ground beef and half ground pork in the mixture.
  • If you prefer a thicker gravy, add 1 teaspoon of cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon of cold water to the simmering gravy.
