Description
A straightforward recipe for traditional, hearty beef chili.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 lbs ground beef
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
- 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
- 1 (15 ounce) can kidney beans, rinsed and drained
- 1 (15 ounce) can pinto beans, rinsed and drained
- 1/4 cup chili powder
- 1 tablespoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup beef broth
Instructions
- Brown the ground beef in a large pot over medium heat. Drain off any excess fat.
- Add the chopped onion to the pot and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more.
- Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, kidney beans, and pinto beans to the pot.
- Stir in the chili powder, cumin, oregano, salt, and pepper.
- Pour in the beef broth.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer. Reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for at least 1 hour, stirring occasionally. For deeper flavor, simmer longer.
- Taste and adjust seasonings before serving.
Notes
- Serve with shredded cheese, sour cream, or chopped green onions if desired.
- This chili tastes better the next day after flavors meld.
